Between Ideals and Reality – What Will We Choose?
Ladies and gentlemen, throughout our lives, we constantly face choices. We want to be righteous and uphold our principles, but reality does not always allow us to do so. Between ideals and reality, what should we choose? Today, I want to explore this question through Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9).
We are taught that ethics and justice are important, but as DS9 shows us, ideals can easily collapse when faced with war and survival. In “In the Pale Moonlight”, Captain Sisko fabricates evidence and condones assassination to bring the Romulans into the Dominion War. As the leader of the Federation, he was expected to uphold its ideals, but in the face of reality, he was forced to make a different choice.
History has shown us similar dilemmas. During World War II, Winston Churchill knew about an impending German attack but chose not to act in order to protect a greater strategic advantage. Ethically, his decision was questionable, but ultimately, it helped secure victory. Does this mean that we, too, must sometimes abandon ideals for the sake of reality?
It is true that idealism is not always practical, but does that justify forsaking morality in the name of reality? In “Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges”, DS9 introduces Section 31, a covert intelligence agency that operates outside the law to protect the Federation. If survival is at stake, is it acceptable to disregard ethics and legality?
Han Feizi, a Chinese Legalist philosopher, once said, "A state is governed not by virtue, but by law and power." If we follow this logic, moral values will disappear, and we will live in an endless struggle for power.
So, what is the answer? We cannot blindly cling to ideals, nor can we surrender entirely to reality. The key is balance. In “Duet”, Kira initially seeks justice by prosecuting a suspected Cardassian war criminal, but in the end, she realizes that true justice is more complex than mere retribution. We must not ignore reality to pursue an ideal, but neither should we distort justice in the name of reality.
The same applies to the world we live in. Corporate ethics often clash with market logic, and political leaders must navigate between morality and pragmatism. The most crucial aspect of balancing ideals and reality is having a strong sense of values while understanding the complexities of the world.
"Between ideals and reality – what will we choose?"
There is no absolute answer to this question. But one thing is clear: if we abandon our ideals, we become mere survivors, and if we ignore reality, we inevitably collide with the world.
What choice will you make? I hope you will become someone who seeks balance—not an extreme idealist, nor a pure realist, but someone who understands both perspectives and makes the best possible choice.
